Ickes, Harold
1874–1952
   Ickes was President ROOSEVELT’s Secretary of the Interior and had responsibility for protecting national resources: coal mines, fuel, fisheries etc. In July 1943 he was appointed Director of the Petroleum Reserves Corporation and set about safeguarding US oil supplies by acquiring the rights to oilfields outside the USA, especially in the Middle East.
